A 73-year-old woman was ambushed, tied up, and robbed at gunpoint in a shocking home invasion in Homer Glen on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
The violent incident occurred at approximately 2:48 p.m. in the 16800 block of S. Deer Path Drive.
The Attack
The victim had just returned from a grocery trip and was pulling her car into her garage when she was confronted. Authorities state a man wearing a hoodie ambushed her, immediately pointing a gun and demanding cash.
A second suspect then reportedly forced the elderly woman into her home. Once inside, the assailants allegedly used items from the residence to bind her wrists and ankles to a chair.
Robbery and Escape
Officials say the suspects stole a credit card from the victim’s purse and demanded her PIN number. After the theft, the criminals left the victim restrained. The suspects drove to a bank in Orland Park where they successfully withdrew $2,000$ from her account.
According to Homer Glen Mayor Christina Neitzke-Troike, the suspects told the victim she could call police, but “by the time you are able to do that, we’ll be long gone.” They also stole her cell phone to delay her.
The victim was able to free herself about 20 minutes later and rushed to a neighbor’s house to call 911. Mayor Neitzke-Troike confirmed the victim is “shaken but is doing okay.”
Investigation Details
Investigators believe the victim was targeted specifically due to her age, though the attack itself appears random. Authorities noted the suspects’ getaway car was a dark-colored Acura stolen out of Chicago.
Mayor Neitzke-Troike also mentioned a similar robbery occurred earlier the same day in nearby Lemont. While ABC7 reported suspects were taken into custody in the Lemont case, the Will County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed if the two incidents are connected.
