If you have a bag of frozen shrimp in your freezer, you should check the label immediately.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for Waterfront Bistro brand shrimp sold at Jewel-Osco and other major retailers.
The FDA reports that the shrimp, imported from Indonesia, may have been processed and packed in unsanitary conditions.
More seriously, the seafood may be contaminated with cesium-137, a radioactive isotope.
According to health officials, exposure to cesium-137 can increase the risk of developing cancer.
The recall specifically targets frozen shrimp distributed by Direct Source Seafood.
While sold under different names across the country, Chicago-area shoppers should look for:
-
Brand: Waterfront Bistro
-
Sold at: Jewel-Osco (and other stores in the Midwest)
-
Other brands involved: Market 32 (sold in other regions)
What should you do?
As of today, no illnesses or injuries have been reported.
However, the FDA advises anyone who purchased this shrimp to take one of the following actions:
-
Throw it away: Place the product in a sealed bag and dispose of it immediately.
-
Return it: Take the product back to your local Jewel-Osco for a full refund.
Do not cook or eat this shrimp, as high heat does not remove radioactive contamination.
