A former contractor at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Hospital has been sentenced after security footage captured him brandishing a loaded gun at a patient in the facility’s lobby.
Glenn Rhymes pleaded guilty on Christmas Eve to carrying a concealed firearm in a hospital.
A judge sentenced him to four months of court supervision for the July incident.
The incident occurred on July 21 inside a crowded UI Health hospital lobby.
Surveillance video shows Rhymes, who was working as a food service contractor at the time, engaging in a heated altercation with a patient.
During the dispute, Rhymes pulled back his clothing to show the patient a fully loaded handgun.
Police body camera footage shows officers tracking Rhymes down shortly after the confrontation.
After officers recovered the loaded weapon, Rhymes admitted on camera that he had shown the patient he was armed.
In the video, Rhymes can be heard telling officers, “I did show him I had a gun.”
A spokesperson for UIC confirmed that no shots were fired and no one was injured during the scare.
Since the incident, the hospital has introduced “new and enhanced security protocols” to prevent future threats.
Aramark, the third-party company that employed Rhymes, confirmed that he is no longer with the company.
