Federal immigration agents, led by Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, have returned to the Chicago area, sparking widespread concern and multiple arrests across the city and suburbs.
On Wednesday morning, federal agents were spotted in Evanston and Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood.
In Evanston, Chopper 7 captured footage of a growing crowd surrounding agents and Commander Bovino.
At least one person was seen being taken into custody at that location.
Businesses and Residents on Edge
The return of federal activity has sent a wave of fear through local communities.
In Little Village, business owners are once again locking their doors to protect customers.
Laura Gutierrez Ramos, owner of the restaurant Nuevo León, says her business has never fully recovered since “Operation Midway Blitz” began earlier this fall.
“This fear continued,” Ramos said. “We are numb. We don’t know whether to go forward or not.”
Reported Arrests and Community Response
Community groups report that at least 15 people have been arrested recently. These include:
-
A man taken into custody near 26th and Kedvale.
-
A tamale vendor detained at 47th and Hermitage shortly after arriving for work.
-
An individual DHS claims damaged a Border Patrol vehicle.
Commander Bovino was also spotted at a union strike picket line at Mauser Packaging Solutions.
Baltazar Enríquez of the Little Village Community Council criticized the tactics, stating agents are targeting everyday workers, including those selling food or taking children to school, rather than focusing solely on violent criminals.
As the holidays approach, local “responders” are patrolling neighborhoods to alert residents of agent activity, while businesses continue to see empty tables due to the community’s fear of leaving their homes.
