Chicago home care aide Gwendolyn Jackson boarded a CTA bus on her way home on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The bus traveled along the 300 block of West 63rd Street in the Englewood neighborhood around 4:40 p.m.

A male passenger on the bus refused to move over to allow a woman to sit down.
A second man accompanying that woman engaged in a heated verbal argument with the first passenger over the seat.

The verbal dispute quickly became physical as the men bumped against Jackson while fighting directly over her head.
One of the men pulled out a firearm and fired a single gunshot inside the crowded transit vehicle.
The single bullet passed through the left side of a 57-year-old male passenger between his ribs and hip.

The same bullet continued forward and struck 65-year-old Jackson directly in her left arm.
Jackson felt blood rushing from her arm while struggling to stand up and escape the immediate gunfire.
“It went through my jacket. I’m hit on this, my left arm,” she told CBS News. “The bullet is still in there. They never took the bullet out. It’s still in my arm. I could feel the blood rushing out of me. I could see the blood.”
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and rushed both wounded passengers to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Medical staff listed the 57-year-old man in critical condition due to his severe internal injuries.
Doctors treated Jackson for her gunshot wound and determined it was safer to leave the bullet inside her arm.
Hospital officials released Jackson to recover at home while she voiced strong concerns regarding CTA transit safety.
“The only thing I got to say is, I mean, the CTA got to get better. You know, these people out here, they’re crazy, they’re angry, they’re mad. We’re all going through something, but there’s no reason to come out and take it out on somebody else,” Jackson told CBS News.
Members of the Citywide Robbery Task Force launched an immediate investigation to identify the two fleeing suspects.

Officers located and arrested 19-year-old Tyrese Jones in the 6700 block of South Halsted Street on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

Police personnel also apprehended 18-year-old Destiny Jones in the 6600 block of South Halsted Street that same day.
Authorities charged both Tyrese Jones and Destiny Jones with one felony count of first-degree attempted murder.
Prosecutors also charged both teenagers with two felony counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and two counts of aggravated battery to transit passengers.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241 President Keith Hill called for immediate police patrols along 63rd Street from Cottage Grove to Western Avenue.
Both defendants appear at the 2600 South California courthouse on Friday, October 9, 2026, for a formal detention hearing.
