PSG goalkeeper Gianlugi Donnaruma has opened up on the secret behind his impressive performance for PsG in the 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Champions League.
The Italian goalkeeper produced an incredible performance with a series of match-winning saves to deny the Gunners a place in the Champions League final.
He recorded an instinctive save to deny Gabriel Martinelli, and stretched his arm to get a hand to Martin Odegaard’e low effort to the surprise of many.
The 26-year-old has now credited mother nature for his top drawer save to deny Odegaard.
He said: “It was a beautiful match. My save on Ødegaard? It was very nice, the ball went between the legs of one of my teammates. I work a lot on low balls, but Mother Nature also had her say.
“I’ll be coming up against a lot of my national teammates. For now I’m enjoying the victory. The atmosphere was stratospheric. I’m extremely happy.”
“I’m not thinking about the final just yet. I’ll be facing many of my old friends, and also my old goalkeeping coach Spinelli.I still hear from him every day.
Donnaruma’s performance attracted praises from Arsenal’s Declan Rice, and Mikel Merino, and also Mikel Arteta.
Merino said: “He showed why he’s an elite goalkeeper; he made some incredible saves and kept them in the game.”
Rice said: “Over the two legs, we could have scored three or four goals but Donnarumma’s been unbelievable.”
Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta was full of praise for the PSG goalkeeper.
He said: “When you look at the two games, who has been their best player on the pitch has been the goalkeeper. He’s made a difference for them in the tie.
Donnaruma made five impressive saves in the encounter to lead PSG to their second Champions League final in five years.
The former AC Milan goalkeeper has one year left on his contract and has been linked with a move to Inter Milan but he insisted that his future lies in Paris.
Donnaruma said: “I’m under contract for one more year… it’s up to the club. If PSG want me to stay, I’m gonna stay. We just have to sign the new contract, but it’s up to the club”.
The PSG goalkeeper has made over 70% saves in the Champions League this season with five clean sheets with an average of 2.47 saves per match.
