Nigerian singer Chike has opened up about a personal experience that shaped his relationship with church and organized religion.
In a candid revelation, the music star shared how an unexpected and uncomfortable moment from years ago pushed him away from attending services.
According to Chike, the turning point came after he visited a church where the praise and worship leader happened to be someone he had a past relationship with.
“The chick leading praise and worship… we had history,” he said. “I was having flashbacks, and she was there kabashing. I just couldn’t… I’m like, who’s that?”
The awkward encounter left him so unsettled that he stopped going to the church after just one week. Chike clarified that his decision had nothing to do with his faith, noting that he still believes strongly in God.
He recalled a defining moment early in his music journey when he prayed for divine help while living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend.
“I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me,” he recounted.
Chike also reflected on a confusing episode that happened shortly after releasing his debut album, explaining that he accidentally consumed a potent edible. “Three, four days into the release of my album, I didn’t even know where I was,” he said.
While he maintains his faith, Chike admitted that the structure of church simply doesn’t align with his lifestyle.
“Church is not for me,” he stated. “There are things I like that I wouldn’t be able to do. What matters most is doing right by people, whether in your personal life, public life, or leadership.”
He added that living a good life and treating others well is more important than outward religious appearances.
