Chicago Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
The incident began around 12:38 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Fifth Avenue.
Officers from the 11th (Harrison) District pulled over a vehicle for a routine traffic stop.
During the stop, officers spotted a firearm sitting on the male driver’s lap.
The officers immediately called for backup to assist with the high-risk situation.
At some point during the encounter, one officer discharged his weapon.
Authorities confirmed that no one was struck by the gunfire.
The suspect suffered minor cuts from broken glass and received treatment at the scene from the Chicago Fire Department.
Police took the suspect into custody and recovered a firearm from the vehicle.
Two officers were transported to a local hospital for observation but did not report physical injuries.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is now leading the investigation into the use of force.
The Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Response Team also responded to the scene to collect evidence.
Per department policy, the involved officer will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days.
