A Chicago police officer shot and killed a man on the North Side Tuesday night after a struggle involving a stolen vehicle investigation, police confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m. in the 5700-block of North Washtenaw Avenue. Officers were investigating an unoccupied, parked stolen sedan when a second dark-colored sedan carrying two men and a woman pulled up next to it.
Police said two men exited the second sedan and attempted to enter the stolen vehicle. As officers approached, one man immediately fled on foot. The second man got back into his sedan.
When officers directed the man to exit the vehicle, he refused, leading to a physical struggle. During the confrontation, the man suddenly accelerated the car, dragging the officer. The officer then fired their weapon, hitting the man in the head. The vehicle subsequently crashed into an unoccupied parked car.
The wounded man was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officer sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital.
Authorities recovered two firearms at the scene. Police took the woman into custody.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has launched an investigation into the shooting.
