A Chicago man was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon after a loaded firearm was found in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop in the South Loop.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on December 10, Cook County Sheriff’s Police Community Safety Team officers pulled over a white Lincoln in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue for suspended registration.
Officers asked the driver, 46-year-old Khalim Cooley, to exit the vehicle because the suspended registration made it subject to towing. While searching the vehicle before the tow, officers recovered a firearm.
Authorities later determined that Cooley had a revoked FOID (Firearm Owner’s Identification) card, and he was immediately taken into custody. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the felony charge later that night. Cooley was also cited for operating an uninsured vehicle and for the suspended registration violation.
Cooley was ordered released from custody during his initial court appearance on December 11 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Note to the Public: Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
