Caicedo was first named Player of the season by his teammates and then he was rewarded with the supporters’ Player of the Season award.

The former Brighton midfielder was impressive in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday, winning the penalty for the third goal by Cole Palmer.

Few hours after the game, he was honoured by his teammates while expressing his pride to be found worthy of their votes.

Caicedo said: “I’m so proud of myself. I thank God first and my family, this is for them too,’ the Ecuador international says. ‘My level is higher now, but I know that in the next few games and next season are going to be very good.

“I feel I’ve improved a lot. Last season, I learned a lot from it, and this season I prayed and told myself that this would be my season, because playing for Chelsea is a dream come true. I’m so happy to be here and win this.

“Being given this award (the Players’ Player of the Year) by my team-mates means a lot to me, but it is also for them. They help me every day and in every game; it is an award for them too.

Caicedo revealed that he was not expecting to win the award.

He said: “I maybe expected it a little, but as I was watching the video [of who the players voted for], I thought first it was Marc Cucurella, then Enzo (Fernandez), and then Cole because they have all had good seasons. So I was very pleased when I heard my name.

“The fans, I appreciate it a lot. We play for them. They help us, support us, and push us when we need them. It’s why this award makes me so happy. Hearing the fans sing my name is a dream come true. It’s always special and pushes me more to do a better job.”

On the women’s side, Erin Cuthbert was named Player of the Season for the second time in her career. She also won it way back in 2018-19.

Tyrique George was named Men’s Academy Player of the Season.
