Border Commander Greg Bovino raised alarms about widespread fraud in how illegal immigrants and foreigners obtain commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to operate semi-trucks.
He urged a major investigation into the process, pointing to recent cases in California where more such drivers have been caught.
Bovino stressed the risks to public safety. “We’re doing everything we can to take these illegal aliens off the streets before they kill more American citizens,” he said.
He questioned how non-English speakers pass the tough CDL exams, which challenge even native English speakers. “The training for a CDL is very difficult for American citizens who speak English. How exactly, in many of these states, California especially, are these truck drivers passing a difficult exam when they can’t even speak English?” Bovino asked.
He demanded clarity on license issuance. “Let’s take a look at how they are being issued! I’ve not received a good answer from any of these states. That bears investigation!”
This comes amid broader crackdowns. A federal audit revealed California issued about 62,000 CDLs to drivers without permanent legal status, violating federal rules.
In response, the state plans to revoke 17,000 such licenses under new federal requirements from the Trump administration.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the dangers, noting states ignore laws and allow unsafe drivers on roads.
Federal rules require legal presence for CDLs, but some states issued “non-domiciled” licenses to non-citizens.
New restrictions now limit this, expiring licenses with immigration status. Incidents involving illegal immigrant truckers, including fatal crashes, have fueled the push for stricter enforcement.
Bovino, who has led immigration operations in Chicago, continues to target criminal illegal immigrants nationwide. Authorities have arrested illegal aliens with CDLs at checkpoints, underscoring the issue.
