Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, became a national hero when he charged at a gunman during a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach.
The attack happened on December 14, 2025, during a Hanukkah celebration, where a father and son opened fire, killing 15 people and injuring many more.
Ahmed hid behind cars, then rushed the shooter, grabbed his rifle, and knocked him down. He got shot twice in the arm and hand, but saved many lives.
Ahmed, who moved from Syria to Australia in 2006, now recovers in hospital after surgery. His cousin Mustafa called him “a hundred percent hero.” Leaders praised his bravery.
US President Donald Trump said Ahmed is “a very, very brave person” who saved many lives. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the act as “the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen” and called Ahmed a “genuine hero.”
People around the world show support through a GoFundMe campaign set up by CarHub Australia.
The fundraiser has now topped $1,134,877, with a goal of $1,710,000. Donations pour in at a rate of $66,757.47 per hour, according to BestLagos.ng. Billionaire Bill Ackman donated $100,000 and shared the verified link on social media. The money will help Ahmed and his family as he heals.
