Ten people were killed, and at least 13 were injured after two gunmen opened fire on a crowd at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening.
NSW Police confirmed the death toll, which includes one of the suspected shooters. Emergency services responded to the scene, a popular gathering spot, just before 7:00 pm.
What Happened
Two gunmen were seen standing on a footbridge near the Bondi Pavilion, firing shots into a crowd gathered beside the beach.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing as many as 50 shots fired. Videos shared on social media showed people screaming and fleeing for cover. Multiple victims were seen injured on the grass at North Bondi as bystanders and emergency teams rushed to help.
Gunmen in Custody, One Shot Dead
Two individuals are confirmed to be in police custody following the incident. One of the men killed in the shooting is believed to be one of the gunmen.
In a dramatic moment caught on video, an unarmed bystander showed immense bravery by tackling one of the gunmen who was hiding behind a tree. The bystander successfully disarmed the shooter before police arrived.
Witness Recounts Terror
A shift manager at a nearby McDonald’s, Patrick Whitehurst, described the terrifying moment the attack began. He quickly locked down the restaurant, sheltering about 20 people inside.
“We were standing right at the entrance and could hear three or four shots,” Whitehurst said. He could hear screaming and see people running to safety. Recalling another unrelated violent incident last year, he described the last couple of years in the area as “mental.”
Official Response and Police Warning
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes “shocking and distressing.” He confirmed that he is in contact with the NSW Premier and the police commissioner, assuring the public that authorities are working to confirm details.
NSW Police have urged the public to avoid the Bondi Beach area and for anyone in the vicinity to take shelter as the major police operation is ongoing.
