Recent History
The waters near Hyde Park have seen similar tragedies in recent months.
Lake Michigan’s currents near the 57th Street Beach can be deceptively strong.
Last summer, emergency crews responded to multiple distress calls in this specific corridor.
Community leaders have previously pushed for increased safety signage along the rocks.
This incident marks the third body recovered from the lakefront on the South Side since the start of the year.
Residents often use this stretch of the lakefront for jogging and evening walks.
The 5400 block is a high-traffic area for both locals and tourists visiting nearby museums.
Police presence remained heavy in the area for several hours following the recovery.
