Here, we will list out the best stadiums in Lagos, Nigeria, and which part of the state they are located. These stadiums are not new, but they are most of them are popular amongst sporty Lagosians. After reading this part, you’ll know which stadiums are the top ones in the city. 

1. National Stadium

National Stadium rightfully takes the lead for the best stadiums in Lagos, Nigeria, it was opened in 1961 and renovated in 1972 by the Nigerian government. It is made up of an Olympic-size swimming arena and a multi-purpose arena which is used for sports such as athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, wrestling, and boxing matches. The stadium was primarily used for football matches until 2004.

The stadium is managed by the Lagos State Government and is regarded to be the best in the state. In 1999, it was announced to have a capacity of  45,000 which is more than the Jos International Stadium which can hold 44,000.

2. Agege Stadium

Agege Stadium is located in the Agege local government in the Ikeja axis of the state. It is the second-best stadium in Lagos, with a seating capacity of 4,000. It was established in 2006 and is used by the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club (MFM F.C). Agege is also home to Nigeria’s Women National Under 17 team and the DreamStar F.C. Ladies.

This stadium just like the National Stadium is also multi-purpose, hosting a variety of sporting events besides volleyball.

Location: Oshitelu Street, Ijaiye 102212, Agege, Lagos.

3. Teslim Balogun Stadium

Teslim Balogun Stadium was named after the late Nigerian professional footballer Teslim Balogun. It began operations in 1984 under the regime of military governor Gbolahan Mudasiru. Although, it was completed and announced a stadium in the year 2007. 

Balogun Stadium is another of the best stadiums in Lagos, Nigeria. It has a capacity of 24,325 people and is often used to host international football matches. It is located alongside the Lagos National Stadium.

Teslim Balogun is mainly used for football matches and is the home field for the First Bank Nigeria Football Club and the Nigeria National Rugby League Team. You can also play volleyball, table tennis, and basketball there.

Location: Surulere, Lagos.

4. Onikan Stadium

Onikan Stadium is another of the best stadiums in Lagos, Nigeria. This multi-sport centre is situated on the southeastern corner of Lagos Island near Tafewa Balewa Square. It was first built in 1930 and named after King George the Fifth. 

Then, between 1963 and 1973, Onikan was renovated and renamed to Lagos City Stadium. Finally, in the year 1980, it was renamed again from Lagos City Stadium to what is now known as Onikan Stadium.

Onikan has housed some of the most prominent football teams in Nigeria including Ikorodu  United F.C, Julius Berger F.C, Stationery Stores F.C, and lots more. It has a seating capacity of 10,000 people.

5. Campos Mini Stadium

Campos Mini Stadium is a top memorial stadium in Lagos State Nigeria. It is specially designed for football matches and is often rented out for games. Campos is the first mini stadium of its kind in the state and a notable landmark in Lagos’ sports scene.

Campos Mini is a well-lit stadium that features a mini football pitch with a FIFA Star 2 artificial turf, a lawn Tennis court, and a mini beach ball pitch. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 in a covered section spectators can sit in.

This is a good place to start developmental football with other sports facilities. Campos is a thoughtful initiative by the Lagos State Government to promote grassroots empowerment.

Location: No. 15 Igbosre Road, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

6. M.K.O Abiola Mini Stadium

M.K.O Abiola Mini Stadium was formerly known as Jakande Estate Field, it is a recreational centre where Jakande Estate residents come together to host sports and entertainment activities. 

A few football competitions such as the Carnival Cup, JK Unity Cup, Lateef Jakande Football Competition, Ade Sparco Football Charity Cup, etc. have all been played at this stadium. All the affairs of this centre are managed by the Estate Youth Organization (EYO).

M.K.O serves as a common playing ground for youths and adults, it is well-equipped and level for all forms of sports activities, making it one of the best stadiums in lagos, Nigeria.

Location: Central Mosque Road, Moshalashi Bus Stop, LCHE, Ejigbo, Lagos.

7. Sports Center, University Of Lagos Akoka

The Sports Center at the University of Lagos is a sports and relaxation complex. It has a state-of-the-art football pitch plus a track for race, and football, an indoor sports hall, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and a swimming pool.

This complex has hosted NUGA games, bank games, and lots more. Different schools in Lagos use its sports facilities for their inter-house sports competition. You can buy food, drinks, snacks and sports equipment here.

The stadium and indoor sports hall can be rented for different events like concerts and tournaments, etc.
