Four Al Jazeera journalists, including well-known reporter Anas Al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a journalists’ tent outside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Sunday. The attack, described by the hospital’s director as a targeted strike, has drawn widespread condemnation.
Al-Sharif, 28, was a prominent Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent who extensively covered northern Gaza.
Alongside him, correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal lost their lives when the tent was hit.
Israel’s military claimed Al-Sharif was a Hamas cell leader involved in planning rocket attacks, stating it had “unequivocal proof” of his ties to the group.
Al Jazeera strongly rejected these accusations, calling them part of a “campaign of incitement” against its reporters. The network has accused Israel of systematically targeting its journalists since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023.
The Committee to Protect Journalists had previously expressed concern for Al-Sharif’s safety, citing an Israeli smear campaign.
Over 200 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since the war began, according to Al Jazeera and rights groups.
The attack has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability and protection for journalists working in conflict zones.
