Chicago police detectives apprehend 23-year-old Amya Vanwinkle in DeKalb for a May 2023 shooting that left a victim in serious condition on the West Side.
Chicago police officers arrested a 23-year-old DeKalb woman on Wednesday in connection with a 2023 West Side shooting.
Authorities charged Amya Vanwinkle with one felony count of first-degree attempted murder.

The violent incident unfolded on May 16, 2023, around 1:00 a.m. in the Austin neighborhood.
Gunfire erupted in the 4900 block of West Ohio Street during the early morning hours.

Vanwinkle allegedly shot an unidentified 43-year-old victim directly in the back during the midnight attack.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene and evaluated the severely injured victim.
Paramedics transported the victim to Stroger Hospital in serious condition for emergency treatment.
Chicago police officers secured the crime scene and searched the pavement for physical evidence.
Area detectives launched an active investigation that spanned over a year to identify the shooter.
Officers tracked Vanwinkle to DeKalb and took her into custody without further incident on Wednesday.

Police records show Vanwinkle previously faced weapons charges in Chicago prior to the 2023 shooting.
Officers arrested Vanwinkle on May 20, 2022, in the 6501 block of South Promontory Drive in the 3rd District.
Law enforcement cited Vanwinkle during that 2022 arrest for felony aggravated unlawful use of a loaded firearm without a valid FOID card.
Vanwinkle remains in custody as she awaits her initial court appearance.
She appears for a formal court hearing on Friday in Cook County.
