The Ajah Market in Eti-Osa Local Government Area has been sealed indefinitely by the Lagos State Government due to what officials describe as “gross environmental sanitation violations.”

The closure was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, on his official social media account on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

The enforcement action is part of the State Government’s ongoing “zero-tolerance” campaign against filth and poor waste disposal practices in markets across Lagos.

The Commissioner stated that the market failed to comply with sanitation laws, leading to the seal-up. Authorities emphasize that traders must uphold hygiene standards to ensure public health and safety.

Following the closure, a local resident directly addressed the issue, pointing a finger at the Eti-Osa Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Speaking to Bestlagos.ng, the resident confirmed the poor state of the market: “I live in Ajah and I can confirm that the market is very dirty, especially the butchery section.”

The resident then questioned the effectiveness of the local government’s efforts, stating, “Despite the sanitation levy collected from traders by Eti-Osa LCDA, the market is still dirty. What is the point of the weekly Thursdays environmental sanitation? This is an indictment of the Eti-Osa LCDA. Mr. Tokunbo Wahab should ask the Eti-Osa LCDA what they do with the sanitation levy.”
