Popular Nollywood actress and producer, Azeezat Shorunmu, has shared the heartbreaking story behind the permanent damage to her vocal cords, a tragedy that has changed her voice and life forever.
Once known for her distinctive on-screen voice, Azeezat now speaks with a fragile, cracked tone. In a recent emotional interview on Oyinmomo TV, the actress revealed that her voice was lost while filming the movie Apase, and despite all efforts to recover it, it never returned to normal.
“It happens while shooting the movie ‘Apase’. Mummy Surutu lost her child that very morning we were to commence shooting,” Azeezat recalled, referring to fellow actress Remi Oshodi, popularly known as Mummy Surutu.
The tragic news came just as filming was set to begin, plunging Azeezat into emotional turmoil. “And she has been paid already. I was confused and didn’t know what to do upon hearing the news. It was when I was shouting that I lost my voice,” she said.
What initially seemed like a temporary issue turned into something far more serious. “My voice was blocked throughout the production. Normally, a blocked throat lasts for a short period. But mine did not open, it became worse after four months,” she explained.
The actress described the emotional toll of the ordeal, saying it was more than just a physical loss. “That was when I realised that it was a painful thing to be dumb. It hurts when you want to express yourself, but you cannot.”
Desperate to recover her voice, Azeezat said she tried everything she could, including spiritual remedies. “I used various things, including anointing oil. By the time the vocal cord was through, it didn’t come out as my voice again. It became this tiny and cracked voice,” she revealed.
Despite the setback, Azeezat has continued to work in the industry, using her new voice as a symbol of strength and resilience. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and unexpected challenges actors face behind the scenes, some of which leave permanent scars.
Through it all, Azeezat Shorunmu remains a figure of courage and inspiration, proving that even when the voice is altered, the message and passion remain undiminished.
