Global rap superstar Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, popularly known as Nicki Minaj, has stunned fans after confirming that her first name, Onika, is derived from the popular Igbo name “Onyekachi.”
The revelation came during an online conversation sparked by her recent speech at the United Nations, where she strongly condemned jihadist attacks on Christians in Nigeria. A fan, impressed by her bold stance, took to X to praise Minaj and highlight the deeper meaning of her name.
The fan shared an image breaking down the meaning of “Onika,” describing it as a Trinidadian variation of Onyekachi, which translates to “Who is greater than God?” The post further claimed that the spiritual significance of her name was a sign she was destined for greatness long before birth.
The fan wrote:
“The name Onika means ‘continued belief in a supreme being who holds ultimate authority and surpasses all others in greatness.’ Let my Nigerian Barbz confirm how God destines someone for greatness before they are even born!”
Nicki Minaj responded with surprise and amusement, confirming the connection.
She replied:
“Will it get even more mysterious if I told you the tattoo on my arm means ‘God is with me’ in Chinese?”
Her response has since gone viral, with Nigerian fans, especially the Barbz celebrating the revelation and embracing Minaj even more closely as “one of their own.”
