Federal authorities announced a sweeping operation on Wednesday, arresting ten individuals in and around Los Angeles for allegedly assaulting and obstructing federal law enforcement officers during immigration enforcement operations over the summer.
The arrests specifically targeted individuals accused of violence during anti-ICE protests, including a notable incident during a raid on an illegal cannabis farm in Camarillo, California.
Charges of Violence and Obstruction
Bill Essayli, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, stressed that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, violence and obstruction are not protected.
“What is not constitutionally protected is a right to engage in violence, or to impede federal agents by assaulting or doxing or obstructing their operations,” Essayli stated during a news conference.
Those charged include two members of VC Defensa, an organization federal prosecutors claim operates a rapid response network designed to impede immigration agents.
Specific allegations against the suspects include:
- Using a vehicle to block U.S. government cars.
- Throwing rocks and objects, including some on fire, at federal vehicles.
- Damaging government property.
One federal contract employee was injured after a rock shattered her vehicle window and struck her during one of the ambushes.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the zero-tolerance stance: “Violence against law enforcement will never be tolerated… we will always defend those who defend America.”
Viral Video Suspect Apprehended, One Remains Fugitive
Federal agents specifically targeted two anti-ICE activists who were allegedly leaders in a disturbing, viral video showing activists violently attacking immigration agents’ cars during the summer pot farm raid.
One suspect, Isai Carrillo, was arrested during a pre-dawn raid while allegedly attempting to flee from Homeland Security agents.
Carrillo was reportedly seen on video smashing in federal agents’ windows during the Camarillo raid.
However, a second activist, Virginia Reyes, who is accused of trailing agents and posting videos, escaped arrest Wednesday morning and is currently considered a fugitive, according to Eddy Wang, Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations in Los Angeles.
The incidents occurred across Los Angeles and were linked to chaotic protests that occurred following a series of raids that netted over 300 arrests and found 14 minor immigrant children on the properties.
Wang was clear that authorities will vigorously protect free speech but will “deliver consequences and bring accountability to those that would assault, impede or obstruct federal law enforcement officers.”
