Legendary Nigerian music icon, Innocent Ujah Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has penned a deeply heartfelt open letter to mark his 25th anniversary in the music industry, paying tribute to the people, moments, and memories that have shaped his extraordinary journey.
In the moving piece titled “Open Letter of Gratitude: 2Baba @ 25 Years in the Industry,” the multiple award-winning singer and songwriter reflected on his humble beginnings, the challenges he overcame, and the unwavering support that helped him evolve into one of Africa’s most respected music legends.
“As I stand on the threshold of 25 years in this incredible journey called music, my heart is full of gratitude, memories, lessons, and love.
This celebration is not mine alone, it belongs to everyone who played a role in shaping the story of Innocent Idibia, 2Baba,” he wrote.
2Baba took time to acknowledge several industry figures who played pivotal roles in his rise to stardom, including Nelson Brown, Kenny Ogungbe (Baba Keke), Dayo Adeneye (D1), Eddie Lawani, and DJ Jimmy Jatt.
He described Nelson Brown as the first person to believe in the dream of Plantashun Boiz; the legendary trio made up of 2Baba, Faze, and Blackface during a time when the industry offered little hope for emerging talents.
“You gave us a voice when we barely had a microphone, a space when all we had was a dream,” he recalled.
The iconic singer also expressed deep appreciation to Baba Keke and D1, whom he credited as mentors who opened professional doors that helped transform both his life and the Nigerian music landscape.
“You opened doors that led us from dreams to destiny. We made history together, we won together. You stood as mentors and big brothers, and your names will forever be etched in my story,” he said.
2Baba further hailed Eddie Lawani for creating opportunities for Plantashun Boiz to showcase their talent at a time when platforms were scarce, and lauded DJ Jimmy Jatt for his long-standing loyalty and brotherly support since the early days of his career.
Beyond personal reflections, the singer emphasized that his 25-year milestone represents more than his own success, it’s a celebration of everyone who contributed to the rise and global recognition of Nigerian music.
“Without the people who believed, corrected, and supported me, my story would have been incomplete,” he declared.
