Afrobeats megastar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has added another feather to his cap, this time, outside the music industry as he has been appointed Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The announcement was made by the state’s Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, to his office.
According to Adewusi, Davido’s appointment is part of Governor Adeleke’s broader vision to reposition sports in Osun State through innovative reforms, sustainable funding, and private sector collaboration.
He noted that the state government is already in the advanced stages of establishing the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the administrative and developmental hub for all sporting activities in the state.
“The introduction of the Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development,” Adewusi stated.
He further disclosed that Davido accepted the appointment without hesitation, expressing readiness to use his global influence, network, and resources to promote sports and youth engagement in Osun State.
Adewusi expressed optimism that the singer’s international recognition will bring unprecedented visibility to Osun’s sporting initiatives and attract local and foreign investors.
“We are confident that Davido’s global brand and reach will significantly boost Osun’s sports ecosystem,” the deputy governor added.
He also assured that the government remains committed to completing the ongoing renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, noting that the facility will meet Olympic standards once fully rehabilitated.
“The project aims to transform the stadium into a world-class venue capable of hosting national and international events,” Adewusi affirmed.
However, the appointment has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, especially residents of Osun State, with some applauding the move as a smart way to leverage Davido’s brand power, while others criticized Governor Adeleke for what they describe as a pattern of family-centered appointments.
It would be recalled that in 2023, the governor also appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, the son of late former Governor Isiaka Adeleke as Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission.
Despite the controversy, Davido’s new role marks a significant step in bridging entertainment, youth empowerment, and sports development, a move many believe could redefine how states engage celebrity influence for public benefit.
