Nigerian activist and outspoken social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, the Dangote Group, and Nigerian influencers over the death of Ruth Otabor, younger sister to Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna.
Ruth’s death was officially confirmed on Sunday in a statement released by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family. She had spent nearly three weeks receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained after being hit by a Dangote truck near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State.
In a fiery video posted online, Verydarkman accused key institutions and individuals of failing to act swiftly when Ruth was still alive and in urgent need of advanced medical treatment. He criticized the silence of high-profile voices until after her passing.
“Phyna’s sister has finally kpai, a lot of people are lending their voices to the RIP but when we needed those voices to pressure Dangote to do the right thing, 19 days was what she spent at the hospital but many refused to post because it won’t give them engagement. You bunch are hypocrites, may God forgive your souls. Nigeria has failed us. President Bola Tinubu, you have failed us all. And to Dangote Group, are you happy now? You had the time to take that girl abroad to treat her,” he said.
His comments came just hours after the Dangote Group issued a condolence statement expressing sadness over Ruth’s death. The company maintained that it had been covering all her medical and financial costs in partnership with its insurers since the accident.
According to the statement, arrangements had already been made to fly Ruth to India for advanced treatment, but the process was still awaiting medical clearance from her doctors before she tragically passed away.
The development has stirred intense debate online, with many Nigerians divided over whether enough was done to save Ruth’s life and whether systemic failures continue to cost ordinary citizens the care they deserve.
