Lagos State swimmer Abduljabar Adama has made history by winning a silver medal for Nigeria at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania.
This achievement marks the first time Nigeria has earned a medal in the history of international swimming competitions.
Adama clinched the silver in the Men’s 50-metre Butterfly event with an impressive time of 23.64 seconds. His performance stands as Nigeria’s best on the global stage since the country began competitive swimming.
Earlier this year, in March, Adama secured a gold medal at the Africa Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
As one of Lagos’ grassroots talents, he was first discovered and showcased by the Lagos State Government at the National Youth Games, an annual multi-sport event for under-15 athletes held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), praised Adama’s success. He stated that it serves as a testament to the state government’s grassroots development program, which focuses on nurturing and grooming young talents.
