A cashier at a Kroger grocery store has become an internet sensation after an image went viral, with many claiming she looks like Derrick Groves, a fugitive who escaped from a New Orleans jail in May 2025, disguising himself as a lady to avoid arrest.
The grainy photo shows a female cashier with long hair tied back, wearing a red vest, ringing up groceries. The post’s caption jokingly suggested it was Groves in disguise, leading to thousands of likes and shares.
Groves, 28, is wanted for a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting that killed four people. He escaped from Orleans Parish Prison with nine others by crawling through a hole behind a toilet.
While nine escapees were recaptured, Groves remains at large, with a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Authorities believe he may have changed his appearance, possibly acting as a woman, to avoid capture.
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has not confirmed the cashier’s identity, stating there’s no evidence linking the woman in the image to Groves.
Additionally, BestLagos confirmed the cashier is not Groves, noting the woman in the clearly edited viral photo lacks the distinctive neck tattoos associated with the fugitive.
“lmao y’all finna get that innocent lady investigated and that Kroger raided for no reason chill.” Someone reacted on social media.
Another said, “That poor lady gonna have to prove she ain’t a dude. Diabolical.”
A third speculated, “Derrick Groves is actually dead. Hard to find someone who is actually gone!”
