The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Yoruba actress Omotola Odunsi.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her colleague, Akinola Akano, popularly known as Segbowe, who took to Instagram on Thursday to share an emotional tribute, alongside screenshots of their last conversation. In the chat, Omotola had assured him she was recovering after a brief illness.
“Motola! Strange but I tried checking on you at the wee hours of that morning. You said you were FINE & BACK! This is a rude shock, Omotola! Journey well, sister. God be with your family,” Segbowe wrote, expressing shock and heartbreak over the unexpected loss.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and industry colleagues, including veteran actor Odunlade Adekola, under whom Omotola reportedly trained during her early years in the industry. Sharing his grief, he wrote, “Jesus Christ. RIP Omotola.”
Omotola Odunsi was known for her roles in several Yoruba-language films, where she brought depth and authenticity to her characters. Her filmography includes standout performances in Lisabi: The Uprising, Officer Adaeze, Amonata, Ayanmo Ire, and Ifedayo.
Her passing marks yet another devastating blow to Nollywood, particularly the Yoruba film sector, which has lost several notable talents in recent times. Fans and colleagues remember her as a rising star whose light was extinguished far too soon.
