The legendary Nigerian music icon and pioneer of Afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has been posthumously honoured with one of the highest recognitions in global music, the Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

The accolade celebrates Fela’s timeless contributions to music and his enduring influence on generations of artists around the world.

The announcement was met with overwhelming joy from fans, music lovers, and cultural enthusiasts across the globe, particularly in Nigeria, where Fela remains a national treasure for his revolutionary sound and unapologetic activism.

Reacting to the historic moment, Fela’s son and renowned musician, Femi Kuti, took to his official Instagram page to express heartfelt gratitude and pride.

“Our father’s legacy lives on. We are honoured to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. His music continues to inspire and unite people across the world,” Femi wrote.

Fela, who passed away in 1997, is celebrated for his fearless political commentary, electrifying performances, and the creation of the Afrobeat genre; a fusion of traditional African rhythms, jazz, highlife, and funk.

Despite his global influence, this marks the first time his work is being officially immortalized by the Recording Academy in such a distinguished manner.

The Grammy Hall of Fame was established to recognize recordings that are at least 25 years old and have “qualitative or historical significance.” Fela now joins a revered list of global music legends whose works have stood the test of time.

As the world continues to rediscover and celebrate Fela’s powerful discography, this Grammy milestone cements his place as one of the greatest musical and cultural icons of all time.
