Veteran Nollywood actress and fitness advocate, Kate Henshaw, has boldly spoken out against what she describes as systemic gender inequality in Nigeria, claiming that the country’s laws are inherently designed to work against women.

In a recent appearance on Arise TV, the celebrated actress did not hold back in addressing the deep-rooted societal and legal imbalances that, according to her, continue to undermine Nigerian women.

Henshaw expressed concern over how women are perceived and treated, both culturally and legally, stressing that Nigerian men are “wired to see women as lesser beings.”

“God first created man, no doubt, but He brought the woman out from the side, and not from under the man’s feet,” she said during the interview. “He created the woman not to be beneath the man but beside, to reign beside him, to be fruitful, multiply and grow together.”

Despite the symbolic equality she described, Henshaw argued that reality tells a different story particularly when it comes to the legal framework in Nigeria.

“But Nigerian men see women as less human. Even our laws, the violence against persons prohibition laws favours men. A man is allowed to chastise his wife. Why?” she asked pointedly.

The Chief Daddy actress joins a growing number of public figures using their platforms to shine a light on the gendered injustices that persist in both traditional norms and legal structures in Nigeria. Her comments have sparked heated conversations online, with many praising her courage, while others debate the interpretation and implementation of the country’s laws.

Kate Henshaw has long been known for her outspoken nature, using her voice not only in the entertainment industry but also as an advocate for social justice and public health. Her latest remarks further establish her as a vocal critic of policies and practices that perpetuate discrimination.

As discussions around gender equality continue to gain momentum in Nigeria, Henshaw’s candid take adds fuel to a national conversation that shows no signs of slowing down.
