Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political leadership while simultaneously applauding the positive influence of the country’s entertainment industry on its global image.

In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, the award-winning singer did not hold back his views on governance in Nigeria. Davido boldly declared that Nigeria suffers from poor leadership, which he believes has held the country back in many aspects.

“We [Nigerians], don’t have the best leaders. We have the worst governments,” he said, expressing frustration over the country’s political situation.

Despite the governance challenges, Davido emphasized the crucial role the entertainment industry has played in reshaping the global perception of Nigeria. Through music, film, and fashion, Nigerian creatives have projected a more vibrant and positive image of the country to the world.

“I am happy that entertainment switched the narrative,” Davido said. “But the music and entertainment industry in general, has impacted our country’s image abroad positively.”

The singer further noted how Nigeria’s entertainment boom has made the country a top destination for international visitors. He recalled how Lagos was flooded with foreigners during the last festive season, with many tourists coming to experience the culture firsthand.

“The entertainment industry is also attracting tourists to the country. Last December, there were more Americans than Nigerians in Lagos. I was like, what are you all doing here?”

Davido pointed out that the cultural tide has turned. While Nigerians once looked outward with admiration for Western experiences, the reverse is now becoming true.

“Back in the days, we used to be excited when coming to America but now, they are the ones coming to Lagos. It is not just music, it is the culture as a whole.”

Highlighting the increasing global presence of African creatives, he added:

“If you go to Paris Fashion Week, about 80 per cent of the models are Africans, the same with the creative directors. It’s impressive.”

Davido’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among many Nigerians who believe that while governance fails to represent the country well, the creativity and talent of its people continue to command respect and admiration on the global stage.
