Matt McBriar, One half of the electronic music duo Bicep, reveals that he has been diagnosed with a large and rare brain tumour, for which he is undergoing treatment.
The Belfast born producer took to Instagram to post his health update and recovery process.
McBriar revealed that the tumour was a craniopharyngioma that developed on his pituitary gland. Although the tumour is non-cancerous, its presence was causing significant health issues.
McBriar had surgery on August 9, which he disclosed was successful and he is currently in the hospital.
In his post, McBriar described suffering localized headaches and fatigue at the end of 2023. In the spring of 2024, he took several blood tests, an MRI and a CT scan, and that was when the tumour was discovered.
“The good news is that it’s almost certainly not cancerous and that I caught it early,” McBriar said.
He pointed out that if the tumour remained undiagnosed, he could have been at risk of vision impairment and other effects resulting from the size of the tumour and its contact point with his optic nerves.
He expects the recovery to take between six and eight weeks after which he will spend more time in aftercare. “I’m feeling incredibly grateful and lucky,” he expressed.
Bicep is a music group that McBriar created with his childhood friend Andy Ferguson, and it has been active in the dance music scene for over a decade. The experimental music pair will go on performing, with Ferguson as a solo act till McBriar is well again.
