A shocking video circulating on social media shows a 67-year-old woman being struck and run over twice by a pickup truck in a Northwest Side crosswalk last week, despite having the right of way.
The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Friday at the busy intersection of Belmont and Pulaski Avenues.
What Happened
In the surveillance video, the woman is seen walking west across Belmont Avenue as a red Ford pickup truck waited at a stoplight.
When the traffic light turned green and the walk signal was activated for pedestrians, the truck abruptly moved into the crosswalk, hitting the woman and running her over twice.
Bystanders quickly rushed to the woman’s aid. An ambulance arrived shortly after to transport her.
Police confirmed the woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Her current condition has not yet been released.
Driver Cited by Police
Chicago police said the 39-year-old driver of the truck remained at the scene until officers arrived.
The driver was issued a citation, according to police, though the specific offense has not been detailed publicly.
-
Snow on Vehicle: The video clearly shows a significant amount of snow and ice covering the truck’s hood, roof, and parts of the windshield. It is not confirmed if this contributed to the crash.
-
Illinois Law: State law strictly prohibits drivers from operating a vehicle with an obstructed view due to snow or ice, and violators can be cited.
Jimmy Paraskevas, the owner of the nearby Belford Tavern who provided the surveillance video, confirmed he witnessed the aftermath of the collision.
Further updates on the woman’s condition are expected soon.
