Chicago police have successfully apprehended a suspect linked to a violent shooting that occurred in late 2025.
Johnathon Yarbrough, age 23, was arrested on January 15, 2026, by specialized units within the Chicago Police Department.
The arrest took place in the 100 block of East Wacker Drive, following an extensive investigation by the Area Two Detective Division.
Yarbrough has been identified as the individual responsible for a shooting on September 7, 2025.
The incident occurred in the 12400 block of South Stewart Avenue within Chicago’s 5th District.
According to police reports, a 57-year-old female victim was shot and seriously injured during the attack.
The Homicide Investigation Support Team assisted in the identification and capture of the offender.
Yarbrough now faces one felony count of aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm.
He also faces multiple felony counts for aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon.
The legal consequences for these charges in the state of Illinois are severe.
Aggravated battery with a firearm is typically classified as a Class X felony when injury occurs.
A Class X felony in Illinois carries a mandatory prison sentence ranging from 6 to 30 years.
The additional weapon charges suggest the offender was in possession of a firearm without a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card or concealed carry license.
Yarbrough is scheduled for a detention hearing on January 18, 2026, at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building.
This court, located at 2600 South California Avenue, handles the initial stages of high-profile felony cases in Cook County.
Under current Illinois law, judges must determine if an offender poses a significant threat to the community before granting pretrial release.
The Context of Chicago’s 5th District Crime
The 5th District, also known as the Calumet District, includes neighborhoods like Roseland and West Pullman.
While Chicago has seen a citywide decrease in violent crime over the last year, neighborhood safety remains a top priority for residents.
Data from late 2025 suggests that targeted police presence in the 5th District has led to more frequent arrests in “cold cases.”
The arrest of Yarbrough nearly four months after the initial shooting highlights the persistence of the Area Two Detective Division.
For the 57-year-old victim, this arrest marks a critical step toward justice after a long recovery process.
Community members in the South Stewart Avenue area have long called for increased patrols to prevent such violence.
