Rapper Odumodublvck made headlines on Sunday night at the 17th Headies Awards, held at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, after refusing to leave the stage during his emotional acceptance speech for the coveted Next Rated award.
Storming the stage with his mother and an entourage of over 10 men, Odumodublvck’s moment quickly turned dramatic when organisers cut off his microphone midway through his speech in an attempt to manage time. However, the rapper stood his ground, declining to exit the stage. The organisers, left with no choice, restored his microphone to allow him finish.
Delivering a heartfelt speech after his mic was restored, Odumodublvck said:
“Against all odds, I have pushed against so many barriers like this. Couple of years back, there were so many feelings we could not express through our music.
The world world clap us down; ‘you can’t be this,’ or ‘you can’t speak like,’ ‘you can’t do this,’ ‘you can’t release music in this way.’
Me standing here today, is a proof that all those things are fallacies. It only would have been possible through my Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, who have been there for me through thick and thin. Tonight, God has shown that God reigns.”
Odumodublvck beat out tough competition from his frequent collaborator Shallipopi, as well as Qing Madi, Ayo Maff, and Nasboi to claim the highly contested Next Rated title. His award was presented by none other than Afrobeats superstar, Davido.
As is tradition, the Next Rated award comes with a brand-new car, adding another milestone to Odumodublvck’s rising career.
Fans may recall that just last year, at the 16th Headies held in Atlanta, Georgia, Odumodublvck won Rookie of the Year, walking away with a house prize in Lagos.
