A 1-year-old boy has died after falling from an apartment building in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood on Friday morning.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at a residential high-rise in the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road.
Police report that the toddler fell from the fourth floor of the building and sustained a severe head injury.
First responders rushed the child to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.
He was later transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the boy’s passing later that afternoon.
One neighbor reportedly witnessed the fall and tried desperately to save the child’s life before paramedics arrived.
Authorities have not yet determined what led up to the fall or how the boy reached the window or balcony.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Chicago police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
