A 35-year-old woman died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after a wrong-way SUV driver collided head-on with her vehicle near Oakwood Boulevard late Sunday night.
A 35-year-old woman died late Sunday night following a violent three-car collision caused by a wrong-way driver on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11:21 p.m. in the northbound lanes near the Oakwood Boulevard exit on the city’s South Side.
According to the Chicago Police Department, an adult male driving a black SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound traffic lanes.
The speeding SUV struck a white sedan head-on, triggering a violent chain-reaction collision.
The force of the initial impact sent the white sedan crashing directly into a nearby black coupe traveling in the same direction.
Paramedics with the Chicago Fire Department rushed to the scene and located the 35-year-old female driver of the white sedan in critical condition.
Emergency crews transported the woman to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where medical staff later pronounced her deceased.
The drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the wreck did not report any physical injuries at the scene.
Responding officers took the male driver of the black SUV into police custody immediately following the crash.
Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased victim pending family notification.
Officers closed portions of northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive for several hours overnight to clear debris and reconstruct the scene.
The Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit continues to lead the ongoing fatal crash investigation.
