A sad event happened on Thursday at the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos when a woman jumped into the Lagos Lagoon and later died. New video evidence shows her final moments, including her struggle in the water and a rescue attempt that couldn’t save her life.

The woman, whose name is still unknown, was on a bus crossing the bridge.

She reportedly told people she needed to get off to relieve herself. But instead of going to the side, she climbed over the railing and jumped into the water below. It happened around 3:00 PM near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront.

A video making rounds online shows what happened next.

After jumping, the woman was seen moving her arms, trying to swim. She didn’t look strong, though, and was clearly having a hard time staying above water. People on the bridge watched in shock, and some shouted as a rescue team rushed to help.

The video captures the rescue boat reaching her. She was pulled out of the lagoon and onto the boat. Voices in the background can be heard saying, “She is still breathing!” Another person yelled, “Her mouth is open!” Someone else suggested, “Hit her on the chest, not the stomach, she will wake.” The rescue team tried to help, but it wasn’t enough.

Police later confirmed she was taken to the UNILAG shore, where doctors checked her and said she had passed away. Her body was moved to the Infectious Disease Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for now.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the incident happened on March 13, and they’re still trying to figure out who she was and why she jumped.

People online and in Lagos are talking a lot about this. Some wonder if she was going through tough times, while others say the bridge needs better safety to stop things like this.

This isn’t the first time someone has jumped off the Third Mainland Bridge, and it’s got folks asking for more help for people who might be struggling.
