A Monday night walk turned into a violent nightmare for a woman in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood.
Chicago police report that an armed thief shot and robbed a woman on the city’s Northwest Side.
The attack occurred just before 8:00 p.m. on the 5700-block of West Diversey Avenue.
A 28-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk when an unknown man approached her.
The offender quickly pulled out a handgun and demanded that she hand over her belongings.
Police state the suspect then escalated the violence by hitting the woman with the pistol.
The gunman proceeded to fire several shots at the victim.
Bullets struck the woman in both her buttocks and her ankle.
The thief successfully made off with the victim’s personal property.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and stabilized the 28-year-old victim.
She was transported to Loyola Hospital for medical treatment.
Medical staff currently list the woman in fair condition.
Officers cordoned off the sidewalk on West Diversey Avenue to collect evidence.
Area detectives have taken over the investigation into the shooting.
As of Tuesday morning, authorities have not released a detailed description of the shooter.
No suspects are currently in custody for the violent robbery.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Area Five detectives.
