Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has opened up on the reasons behind his new deal that is expected to keep him at the club for the next two years.
Van Dijk ended speculations about his immediate future by signing a new two-year deal on Thursday to extend his stay at Anfield.
He joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a reported fee of £75m, and he has established himself as a key player for the club.
The former Celtic defender was linked with a move to PSG, but he has described it as a proud feeling to remain at the club despite suitors for his services.
Van Dijk said: “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family.
“I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.
“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible.
“The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”
Van Dijk has played in every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season with impressive performances coupled with his leadership role in the team.
He has helped Liverpool to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup and EFL Cup twice.
Van Dijk is close to leading Liverpool to their 20th Premier League title as they currently lead Arsenal by 13 points with six matches to go.
Up next for Liverpool is a Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday at the King Power Stadium.
