In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, operatives from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) have arrested three individuals accused of cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud.

The suspects, identified as Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke, were apprehended in Abuja and Lagos following a detailed investigation into their activities.

Authorities revealed that the trio engaged in large-scale digital impersonation schemes and other cyber-related offenses. On July 18, 2025, the suspects allegedly hacked into a WhatsApp account belonging to an unsuspecting victim. They then contacted the user, demanding a ransom of Three Million Naira (₦3,000,000) and threatening to expose confidential data if the payment was not made.

A forensic analysis of the compromised account played a key role in tracing the suspects. This led not only to their arrest and the recovery of the hacked account but also to the discovery of an ongoing organized crime network, which remains under active investigation.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, emphasized the police force’s dedication to tackling cyber threats head-on. He highlighted the adoption of modern, digitalized strategies and ongoing training for personnel to align with global best practices amid rising online dangers.

This arrest highlights the increasing efforts by Nigerian law enforcement to combat the surge in cybercrimes, which have affected numerous individuals and businesses across the country. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

The statement was issued by DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters in Abuja, on August 19, 2025.
