The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into a viral video that has stirred controversy online, showing Nollywood actress Angela Okorie jogging in public while being escorted by armed police officers.
The video, which surfaced recently and quickly went viral, captured the actress taking a seemingly routine jog in an open area. However, what caught the public’s attention was not just her presence, but the armed police officers walking closely behind her. The footage, believed to be taken during the filming of a new project, has since ignited debates across social media on the conduct of the officers involved.
In response to the growing backlash, the Nigeria Police, through its spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Wednesday via its official X handle, condemning the officers’ behavior. According to the statement, the actions of the policemen fall short of the professional standards expected from members of the Force.
“The Nigeria Police Force strongly frowns at the conduct of armed police officers seen in a viral video trailing actress Angela Okorie while she jogged—an act considered clearly inconsistent with the professional standards and decorum expected of personnel of the Force,” the statement read.
While initial reactions suggested the video might be a publicity stunt or a behind-the-scenes moment from a movie, Adejobi noted that the Force is not taking the matter lightly. “The incident, which appears to have occurred on or around a movie set, has also sparked widespread public concern and criticism,” he stated.
Angela Okorie, who recently began promoting a film project titled Queens of Guns, is yet to publicly address the incident or clarify the context of the video.
Adejobi emphasized that even if the video was part of a scripted production, the officers’ conduct was still unacceptable. “While it remains unclear whether the scene was part of a scripted production, the conduct of the officers seen in the video falls short of the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement continued.
He further assured the public that the Force has commenced internal procedures to uncover the facts and identify those involved. “Accordingly, necessary administrative processes have been initiated to identify the officers involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the video, while appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of the review.”
As the controversy continues to unfold, many Nigerians are calling for accountability and a clear distinction between entertainment portrayals and professional conduct in uniformed services.
