Bayelsa State was thrown into panic on Thursday after Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, suddenly collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 pm, sending shockwaves through the government secretariat as staff and security aides scrambled to get him urgent medical attention. He was immediately taken to the hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors worked swiftly to stabilize him before moving him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for closer monitoring.
Although the exact cause of the collapse has not been officially disclosed, insiders suggest it may be related to a heart-related issue, noting that the deputy governor had been under intense pressure and operating on a tight schedule in recent weeks.
Security operatives have since cordoned off parts of the hospital, restricting movement as top government officials visit to show solidarity and monitor his condition.
Attempts to reach Ewhrudjakpo’s media aide were unsuccessful, but medical personnel at the FMC confirmed that he is receiving proper care and is currently in stable condition.
