The Oworo Youth Forum (OYF) has strongly condemned the Lagos State Government’s ongoing demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, describing the action as a “crime against humanity.”
The group issued a statement today, following reports that houses were being demolished in the middle of the night, leaving many residents, including women and children, homeless.
According to a statement signed by Opeyemi Ogunlami, the Secretary, and Towolawi Jamiu, the PRO, the demolition in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, began around 1:00 AM on Friday, September 6, 2025.
The Forum stated that this is a continuation of an attack on the community that has reportedly destroyed over 1,000 homes and displaced more than 30,000 people since July 2023.
The OYF accused the government of inhumane acts, alleging that tear gas was fired at residents who tried to document the demolitions.
The group believes the demolitions are part of a larger plan to seize land from the poor and sell it to the wealthy, citing billboards advertising a planned “Elite Villa Estate” in the area.
The Forum has demanded that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu immediately halt all demolitions in Oworonshoki, prosecute those responsible for the “crime,” and provide adequate compensation and resettlement for those whose properties have been destroyed.
They stressed that the right to shelter is a fundamental human right that must be protected.
