Chicago police released surveillance footage of two hooded, masked suspects armed with a handgun and rifle who chased and fatally shot 26-year-old Naseem D. Stevens in Greater Grand Crossing.
Chicago police have released surveillance video of two masked suspects wanted in connection with a deadly weekend shooting on the city’s South Side.
The fatal attack occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, along the 7500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing.
Authorities stated 26-year-old Naseem D. Stevens was standing near his vehicle outside a local business when a black sedan carrying two suspects approached.
One of the vehicle occupants pulled out a handgun and fired directly toward Stevens.
Stevens managed to enter his vehicle and immediately attempted to drive away from the scene.
The suspects pursued Stevens in traffic while continuing to shoot at his moving vehicle.
Stevens suffered gunshot wounds to his back and knee during the rolling attack.
The vehicle then crashed into a nearby utility pole.
First responders transported Stevens to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where medical staff later pronounced him dead.
An official autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Stevens died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Detectives released surveillance footage showing both suspects dressed in dark clothing with hoods and masked faces.
Investigators noted one suspect was armed with a handgun, while the second suspect carried a rifle.
Family Speaks
According to a report from CBS News Chicago, Stevens worked in construction with his family, was expecting his first child, and was not “in the streets”.
Family members told CBS News that Stevens was a former member of the South Shore Drill Team who was strictly focused on building a life for his growing family.
Relatives shared that Stevens grew up in the neighborhood, where his family has lived for 36 years, and felt completely safe visiting the familiar gas station.
Family members expressed shock over why he was targeted, noting the attackers jumped out with military-grade firearms and fired blindly through his dark-tinted windows.
Stevens’ family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral costs and support his unborn child while pleading with the community for justice.
