British-Nigerian singer and rapper, Darkoo, has shared her perspective on the powerful role women play in shaping global music trends and influencing what becomes popular.
The Favourite Girl hitmaker made the revelation while appearing on a recent episode of the Comfortably Speaking podcast, where she highlighted how women’s tastes often determine which songs gain momentum and dominate the culture.
According to Darkoo, many of the world’s biggest songs and genres owe their success to women’s influence. She explained that women not only choose the music they love but also subtly influence men into embracing those sounds.
“The truth of the matter is music, the world in general, is dictated by women. You play Sexyy Red in your car, why? Because you go and pick up one girl, you want her to enter your Lamborghini, what are you going to play? Are you going to play trap, trap in a Brando?” Darkoo said.
She further used the meteoric rise of South Africa’s Amapiano as an example of how women’s influence drives cultural adoption. The singer noted that women were among the first to embrace the genre, particularly through dance trends on social media, which gradually made it more mainstream.
“A lot of music you like is because women like it. And if you listen to certain genres of music, I feel like women got into Amapiano first when they were doing dance trends on social media. Back then, people were looking at them like they were being weird. But now, men are f*cking with Amapiano,” she explained.
With her bold statement, Darkoo has sparked conversations on the often under-acknowledged role of women as cultural tastemakers, showing how their preferences continue to shape what dominates the airwaves and dance floors across the globe.
