Mark Hurn, 54, was killed after a heated family quarrel regarding the care of a relative’s mother spilled onto an East 76th Street sidewalk late Sunday evening.
A domestic dispute regarding the care of an elderly mother turned fatal late Sunday night on the city’s South Side.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 54-year-old Mark Hurn.
The fatal altercation occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the 500 block of East 76th Street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
According to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times, citing a police report, a family argument erupted inside a residence centered around the suspect and the care of his mother.
During the quarrel, the suspect became hostile toward Hurn, who was the boyfriend of the suspect’s sister.
The suspect demanded that Hurn “step outside” to settle the dispute on the sidewalk.
Relatives remaining inside the residence heard three gunshots ring out shortly after both men walked outdoors.
Family members rushed outside and discovered Hurn lying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, abdomen, and legs.
Witnesses observed the gunman fleeing the scene immediately following the gunfire.
Paramedics with the Chicago Fire Department rushed Hurn to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
Medical personnel pronounced Hurn dead at 11:22 p.m.
No arrests have been announced as law enforcement officers continue searching for the suspect.
Area Two detectives spearheaded the ongoing homicide investigation.
