Chicago police have arrested and charged a 31-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Malik Nelson, who resides in the 3100 block of W. Franklin Blvd. in Chicago, was taken into custody by law enforcement officers.

Police reports indicate that the arrest took place on October 16, 2026, in the 200 block of N. Michigan Ave.

Investigators identified Nelson as the individual responsible for a violent shooting that took place nearly a month prior.

The initial incident unfolded on September 10, 2026, at approximately 5:09 p.m.

According to Chicago police officials, a 38-year-old male victim was standing in the 800 block of North Kedzie Avenue within the police department’s 11th District.

The victim was approached by someone while in the area and sustained critical gunshot wounds to the face and head.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene of the afternoon shooting to render aid to the wounded man.

The victim was transported via ambulance to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Authorities later identified the victim as 38-year-old Raymond Hammitte, whose home address was not immediately known.

Hammitte succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital on September 15.

An autopsy conducted by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Hammitte’s death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

Following the fatal attack, an intensive investigation was launched by local detectives to identify and track down the gunman.

Authorities ultimately connected Nelson to the fatal encounter and placed him into custody without incident on Michigan Avenue.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office subsequently approved formal felony charges against the accused shooter.

Nelson has been officially charged with one felony count of murder in the first degree.

Additionally, he faces one felony count of murder with strong probability of death or injury.

A detention hearing for Nelson has been scheduled to take place at the courthouse located at 2600 S. California.

The scheduled court date is set for October 18, 2026, where a judge will determine his pre-trial custody status.

At the time of the announcement, police officials noted that no additional information regarding a possible motive or further suspects was immediately available.

Prior Arrest History

Court and Chicago Police Department records show that Nelson has an extensive prior arrest history in Chicago involving weapons offenses and traffic violations.

On July 24, 2021, Nelson was arrested by Chicago Police Department officers in the 1424 S. Karlov Ave. area under CB number 30070898 and charged with felony possession of a weapon as a felon.

Prior to that, on August 28, 2020, Nelson was arrested at 510 N. Homan Ave. under CB number 19989581 and faced charges for felon weapons possession alongside multiple traffic infractions.

On April 8, 2020, Nelson was arrested under CB number 19955264 at 3920 W. Augusta Blvd. and charged with possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card alongside traffic violations.

Records also indicate an earlier arrest on November 1, 2019, under CB number 19892009 in the 658 N. Ridgeway Ave. area, where he was charged with driving on a suspended license and equipment violations.
