Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored his 19th goal of the season for Atalanta in their 4-0 win over Monza on Sunday in a 2024-25 Serie A encounter.
Lookman ended his two-month goal drought with the third goal of the encounter for the visitors.
Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring for Atalanta in the 12th minute before adding the second gold in the 23rd minute.
The reigning African footballer of the year finished off a long pass from Mateo Retegui to beat the goalkeeper at the near post.
It was Lookman’s 19th goal of the season in all competitions, and his 14th in the Serie A.
Atalanta coach, Gian Piero Gasperini was impressed with Lookman’s performance in the second half.
He said: “Lookman did well in the second half; I wasn’t too happy with him in the first.
“Carnesecchi was decisive a few times in the first half and also at the end.
“We can’t afford to lose focus: we’re very close to our goal, and we need the enthusiasm to keep flying and reach another important milestone. Wasting it due to lapses in concentration would be a real shame.”
The Italian manager blamed injuries and a series of events for their poor home form this season.
Gasperini said: “Despite the injuries—we’ve had Scalvini, Kossounou, and Kolasinac out—we’ve never had major defensive problems,” Gasperini told DAZN after his side’s win.
“At home, especially in the second half of the season, we’ve lacked the attacking cohesion we had earlier in the year.
“Our overall attacking performance has dropped, we haven’t found alternative solutions, and that’s cost us points at home.
“There have also been some unlucky games, with incidents that made the difference—penalties not awarded, questionable red cards.
“I’m not saying all of them, but a few of those calls could have given us more points. We haven’t made home advantage count, while away from home we’ve been almost consistently solid.”
Lookman will be hoping to add to his tally when Atalanta take on Roma next Monday.
