Lagos State authorities launched surprise enforcement operations on Wednesday, targeting illegal traders at the Trade Fair underbridge and along the Mile 2-Oshodi Expressway.
Operatives from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps removed unauthorized stalls and vendors from these busy areas.
The raids aim to clear roadways obstructed by informal markets. These activities block traffic, pose safety risks to motorists and pedestrians, and disrupt the city’s urban planning goals.
Videos from the scene show officers in bright vests dismantling makeshift shops, with goods scattered and traders quickly packing up under cloudy skies.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the action on social media. He stated, “Our roads and bridges are not marketplaces. Relocate to approved markets immediately.”
All seized items will undergo processing under state laws.
This move aligns with Lagos State’s #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign, which seeks to maintain clean and orderly public spaces. Similar operations have occurred recently in areas like Lekki and Ikorodu, where violators faced arrests or property seals.
